Thanks for all of your comments on the mustang. I really have to give our local BLM office some props because all they do is keep an eye out for them.
They work hard to strike the correct balance between allowing the animals to be wild animals and keeping an eye on them so they are in good shape.
BillieJean, as far as getting close to them, I was shooting with a 100-400mm lens on a 7D body, so I had quite the reach on it. It is easy to predict where animals will be in this high desert area - if you find a water source, wait, and be patient - and they will come to you. I had set myself up in a patch of sagebrush when I got lucky and they came in for water. I was probably only 20 feet from them for yesterday's photo.
